What is under your feet right now? Rocks? Carpet? Sand? No matter what it is, you are attached to it by a gravitational pull. The Earth has a center of gravity, and so do you. Thanks to these Stillpoints you can get some traction and move.
Stillness underlies motion, and it also makes reasoning possible. Einstein’s famous equation E=mc2 relies on “=” as ground. Asking if something is good or bad relies on “is” to connect the thing to the judgement. Like the ground under our feet, we take these equivalencies for granted. Reality requires them, and they are too familiar to notice. Our focus is on the action, not the reliable constants.
Take a moment to be grateful for the ground beneath your feet and your thoughts:
- Where do you rely on physical steadiness? While sitting in a chair? Driving a car? In what other activities do you count on something holding still?
- Where do you rely on mental steadiness? Your sense of time passing? Your sense of self? What habits ground your day?
- A rhythm can also be a form of steadiness. In what ways do you experience rhythms carrying the past into the present? Seasons? Celebrations?
The ground that holds still can’t be separated from the activities it allows. The basic unit of the Fractal Universe, the Sparksphere, is made of both Being and Becoming. Noticing the constant support of Being helps bring clarity to the sometimes-chaotic transformations of Becoming.
